Formula manufacturers began advertising directly to consumers in 1989, in violation of a long-standing, informal agreement among formula manufactures and several national health organizations. In their advertising, it is usually stated that breast feeding is best, but infant formula sales continue rise. Formula manufactures have also used their power to influence elected officials.

The current trend in our society of feeding the majority of infants with formula is placing their health and their future at risk. Parents, given access to complete information about all aspects of formula feeding, are better able to make healthier choices for their children. Feeding our children in a way that is healthy and sustainable leads to the type of world we want our children to inherent.

There are many reasons for the increased use of infant formulas and the decline in breastfeeding. Marketing infant formula is clearly presented as profit driven, not health promoting. As the information about the risks involved with formula feeding infants versus the benefits of breastfeeding are more readily available, parents will be able to make more informed choices.
